As Summer Comes To A Close

September 17, 2025

I am sitting here, listing to the cicadas sing their summer song, and I am thinking about all the things that I love about summer. I am not a summer girl, and I have a hard time feeling annoyed with the heat and the hype around a season that I have never really enjoyed, but I have decided that I need a little more positivity in my outlook, so here here are the things that I have loved about summer:

  • in childhood, the ability to stay up late watching movies after picking them out at blockbuster

  • morning doves song in the cool mornings

  • cicadas song in the muggy evenings

  • in childhood, going to the pool to see your friends and hoping the boy you like is there

  • in childhood, the seemingly endless amount of time to be creative and playful

  • in childhood, preparing for the new school year with all the fun outfits you’re going to wear and the new hairstyles you’re going to try

  • farmers markets

  • fresh flowers

  • waking up to large intricate webs spun in the trees and covered in dew

  • sundresses

  • lemonade

  • fresh fruit

  • the Iowa state fair

  • grill outs

  • fireworks on the Fourth of July

  • lush rolling hills

on the other side of that same hand, I want to talk about all the things that I love about the beginning of fall. As I am sure you are well aware at this point, I am a huge fan of autumn, and consider myself a fall girl through and through. So, here are my favorite things about this transitional time as we move into fall:

  • changing weather

  • cool mornings

  • the leaves beginning to change and the smell that comes with it

  • in childhood, getting a new planner and filling it with my friends and loved ones birthdays ( I still love this, but now I get a new one in January )

  • in childhood, getting school supplies for the upcoming year

  • hearing the marching band practice in the early mornings for the football games

  • being able to wear layers again

  • autumn favors such as pumpkin, butternut squash, caramel apples, cinnamon and so on

  • sweating less

  • the feeling of a new beginning - of something starting

I hope, if nothing else, this reminds you to love the seasons as they come and go and to never wish away time ( this is something I struggle with a lot ). Have a wonderful September.
