Movie Review: K Pop Demon Hunters

July 9, 2025

Eli and I watched this new Netflix movie a couple weeks ago, and I can honestly say, I have thought about it every day. Everything about this movie was just insanely well done. The voice casting was incredible - all of the vocalists have such an incredible vocal range as well as range of emotional depth. The team in charge of the choreography, both in the fight scenes and in the dance scenes (and the scenes that have both) did such a good job. When in reference to the boy band, Saja Boys, the camera work is different than it is with the girl group, Huntrix, which shows the dissonance between them. There are many scenes where the camera pans over the crowd, and even the extras facial expressions are so incredibly thought out. Not to mention the costuming for every character. There are nods towards traditional Korean clothing and art, while still keeping every outfit (okay, almost every outfit) very chic and cool. I could list off all the things that I love about this movie for hours, but the last incredible thing I will mention might just be my favorite: the music. Insane. Every single song in this movie is a bop. We have been playing the whole soundtrack nonstop (and that is saying something - we just moved across the country and had a lot of car time) because every song is such a good summer hit. In case you had yet to catch on, I would highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. Not just those who liked animated movies, not just those who like k-pop, not just those who like a good story about culture and duty and found family and love, but honestly everyone.

We follow the story of a girl band called Huntrix who just so happens to also be tasked with the burden of keeping the world safe from the demon world thought the power of song. With their voices, they create a barrier between worlds called a Honmoon. At the beginning of the movie, we see that the Honmoon has some holes in it that the girls need to repair, and they are able to fairly easily. Rumi, the lead singer and our main character, starts to not be able to hit the notes she is used to hitting (again, this vocalist is crazy good) and it is because of a secret she has been hiding her whole life, and while this is happening, a boy band appears out of nowhere and starts to steal all their fans. It feels like they need to battle these boys to win back everything they are starting to lose, but these guys are incredible and not to mention, hot. One last thing, they’re also demons. Will the girls get their fans back? Will they be able to make the Golden Honmoon to block out the demons forever? Will they be able to defeat the demon king and protect the world?

I cannot say enough how much I loved this movie, and how impactful it was to both Eli and me. I really could talk about it forever. 10/10
