Book Review: Crushing by Sophie Burrows

May 1, 2026

We follow the illustrated tale of two young adults navigating loneliness and life in the big city. One of doing her best to put herself out there while the other is doing his best to stay afloat. How are you supposed to make friends or start a relationship when everyone is so invested in their own life that they have a hard time looking up? You included!

This is a beautiful graphic novel with no dialogue and honestly, it’s not missed. Sophie does such a brilliant job with color and emotion, it’s easy to not notice there isn’t a single conversation being had. She so well encapsulated the feeling of loneliness and desire to connect with others through two different points of view. The woman is trying to connect and the man feels like it’s a lost cause and is just trying to make it through. Both end with hope and direction, even in the midst of chaos.

I would recommend this to any art or graphic novel lover. It’s beautiful and well done. I look forward to reading it again.
